Penny Lang volunteers at a local food bank and delivers hot lunches to shut ins. Her newest client is a widower, Martin Brooks, who lives in a run down house on the Greater Cleveland border. The unusual thing about Martin's house from everyone else she delivers to, is that Martin's living room is filled with books! There isn't one wall in the living room that doesn't have two or three bookcase loaded with books!
Over time, she discovers that it was his wife, Martha, who recently passed away, who would buy up boxes of used books at garage sales- never wanting to leave even one book behind. Since he hated arguing with her about it, the piles of books grew. First in the garage and then the living room. The problem is that with Martha gone, his daughter fears for his well being and
is pressuring him to move into an adult care facility where he can meet new friends.
Seeing that he is overwhelmed by it all, Penny befriends him and in her spare time helps him begin to sort through the piles of books. Some to sell, some to donate and the rest to pitch. But will it be enough to convince his daughter that he can handle living on his own?
Martin's House of Books is a Young Adult story about friendship and the idiosyncrasies many of us tend to overlook in our friends and loved ones.
The story is about 50 pages in length
